At Home Depot today I went to pick up a spray bottle and an extension cord, and of course could not help but pass by their garden offerings. What should I find but Spanish lavender — what an incredible aroma. I’ve never smelled anything like it in my life. I bought two of those, more lemon geraniums on sale, six non-Spanish lavender, some melon plants, and oregano.
I’m hoping to make the grounds aromatic with lavender on the wind, so people passing by will feel refreshed.
Took the opportunity to plant some of the lavender as well as the herbs and melons, and transplant a few stringy herbs.
Rabbit update:
I was walking to the shed when I spotted a rabbit in the yard — the rabbit I assume who ate the carrot tops — out of the corner of my eye. It was fairly small, munching on a piece of grass. When it saw me, it stopped moving, but it didn’t bolt, so I played it cool and called the cat over, who merrily trotted over. I tried to point out the rabbit to the cat by gesturing. The cat simply watched me wave my hand back and forth. I aimed my cats head at the rabbit but he failed to see it. The rabbit looked ready to bolt. With no other choice, I picked up the cat and threw him at the rabbit; the rabbit dashed away and that caught my cat’s eye — he chased it right up to the fence, revealing the rabbit’s main entrance!
I chopped back the large leafy plants growing by the fence for better visibility, and plugged the holes with debris topped with used cat litter. Of course they’d create an entrance near the wood pile.
Vegetable growth update:
First cucumber of the season:
I also discovered a large beetle pupa (not pictured) and left it out for the birds to discover. That makes the fourth such beetle pupa. I found it while digging out mulch from near the big mulberry tree and found the other three while digging up ground near the willow trees. It was about half the size of my thumb, and given its size, I was not sure whether it would be beneficial to the garden or not.
