Tonight I finally put the pear in the ground and started training the branches. The pear limbs are nice and supple compared to other fruit trees of its height and age. I re-used the stakes from when I dug up the rubber play area to support the tree from three angles. The wind blew it over several times towards the fence, so I put extra support pulling it away from the fence in case of wind again.
Also a big moment, the fig is finally in the ground! I had to prune some of the smaller leaves off, they looked like suckers and I want there to be air circulation around the base. I will need to get some help pruning the big mulberry to share sunlight with the fig. I thought about putting the fig on the sunny side of the yard, but it would just grow too big and shade everything out.
I also put my learnings into practice and I just left the soil I dug out. No point in trying to cart it off somewhere: too much labor. I put a nice amount of compost around it and left the root base bare. I didn’t like trimming the leaves off the fig but I had to. I’ll be able to keep an eye on the fig from the dining room.
