Grass repair

I’ve pulled up the cardboard between the beds. As I thought, the ground beneath became hard and cracked. It held some moisture, but was mostly mud. Some grass that was covered had yellowed; I’m hoping it’ll come back. My theory is that having dry spots between the garden beds is exacerbating moisture loss, that is, the “micro-climates” are dry in these spots.

I put down a bag of leaf compost, and some peat moss on top of a heavy layer of grass seed.

Cardboard is gone, I’ve piled it in a corner to decay. Seed layer, thin compost layer, thin peat moss layer.

One of the first raised beds, I threw some peas in the dirt along with clover. This gets watered only when it rains.

I have had the kids who mow the lawn drop the clippings over the side of the fence. That also killed the grass in a particular spot. So, I’m working on rehabilitating the grass there.

Former pile of grass clippings. Same treatment here: compost and peat moss.
