I’ve learned this season that tomatoes and melons are extremely proliferous and are capable of growing into enormous plants. Unsupported, tomatoes will simply grow along the ground, everywhere; the same for melons.
I currently have a single watermelon plant covering a 15×20 area. And the tomatoes which I have planted in a 4×8 foot bed are about six feet high, and still trying to grow every which way.
If I left tomato plants to their own devices, they would surely cover the entire yard. Seeing that tomatoes grow along the ground, I think next season I will experiment and designate a “tomato run”, instead of growing them tall, and casting shade on other plants that need sunlight. This solves the problem of how to maximize sunlight as well as growth.
