Filling wasp burrows — oops

[Updated Aug 24) The other day I discovered a number of “cicada killer” wasp burrows. Initally I thought they were rodent holes dug along the front steps to my home. Without knowing what had actually burrowed there, I plugged every hole with a stick as wide as the hole, and then sealed off (decorated) the exterior of each dugout with used cat litter (no poop). Turns out, cicada killers feed on cicadas, so, I want these around. If I had known earlier, I would not have disturbed the nests.

At least the holes are aerating the soil.

Plugged at least five entryways. If I had left these burrows alone, the nights might have been quieter with fewer cicadas around.

I will not disturb the burrows the next time I see them, since they are part of the ecosystem cycle.
